Chapter 1: Arrival in Nova Scotia

Rebecca had always dreamed of escaping the hustle and bustle of city life. When she inherited Blackwood Cottage from a distant relative she had never met, she saw it as an opportunity to start afresh. Located in the remote coastal village of Shelburne, Nova Scotia, the cottage was quaint and picturesque, surrounded by dense forests and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Upon arriving, she was captivated by the rugged beauty of the landscape. The locals were friendly, though they seemed wary when she mentioned the cottage. She dismissed their apprehension, attributing it to small-town superstitions.

Chapter 2: Settling In

The first few days were peaceful. She spent her time unpacking, exploring the nearby woods, and acquainting herself with the village. She found old family photos and documents in the attic, revealing a lineage she knew little about. Her great-great-grandmother, Eliza Blackwood, had lived there during the late 19th century and was rumored to be a reclusive woman with a mysterious past.

One night, she found an old journal belonging to Eliza. The entries were cryptic, filled with references to "the black" and "the murmurs." Intrigued, Rebecca decided to delve deeper into her ancestor's life, hoping to uncover the secrets of Blackwood.

Chapter 3: The Whispers

As days turned into weeks, she began to experience strange occurrences. It started with stifled murmurs at night, barely audible but persistent. She often felt a cold draft, despite all windows and doors being shut. Items would move on their own, and she routinely wakened to find herself in different rooms, with no memory of how she got there.

Determined to find a rational explanation, she contacted the village historian, Mr. Thompson. He was reluctant to talk about the cottage but eventually revealed that Eliza Blackwood was rumored to have practiced dark rituals. Locals believed she had summoned malevolent spirits, which led to her untimely death and the cottage's cursed reputation.

Chapter 4: The Visions

Later that week, the murmurs grew louder. Rebecca saw shadowy figures flitting through the house and felt an overwhelming sense of dread. She could hear Eliza’s voice, pleading, warning her to leave. The next morning, she found herself in the attic, surrounded by old candles and a circle of salt. Her hands were covered in soot, and she realized she had been reenacting one of Eliza’s ceremonies.

Frightened and desperate for answers, she returned to the journal. She discovered a final, frantic entry where Eliza confessed to making a pact with an otherworldly entity, promising her soul in exchange for forbidden knowledge. The entity, however, had tricked her, condemning her and her descendants to eternal torment.

Chapter 5: The Descent

Her mental state began to deteriorate. She couldn’t distinguish between reality and hallucination. The mutters were incessant, the visions more vivid. She saw Eliza’s eidolic figure, her eyes hollow and filled with sorrow. The presence that haunted Eliza now preyed on Rebecca, feeding on her worry and fluster.

A day later, Rebecca found herself standing on the edge of a cliff, staring down at the crashing waves below. She felt an invisible force urging her to jump, to end the torment. But something within her resisted, a softened particle of reassurance.

Chapter 6: The Revelation

Determined to break the malediction, she sought the help of a local priest, Father Donovan. He performed an exorcism, but it only seemed to anger the being... The cottage shook violently, and she was thrown into a vision of the past. She saw Eliza, young and terrified, performing the ritual that had doomed them all.

In the vision, Eliza turned to Rebecca, her eyes filled with desperation. “Forgive me,” she hushed. “Stop this, whatever the cost.”

She realized that the only way to free herself and Eliza’s spirit was to confront the entity and reject the black. She gathered her strength and faced the malevolent presence, declaring that she would no longer be its victim.

Chapter 7: The Confrontation

In a final, climactic showdown, she confronted the entity in the heart of the cottage. The walls trembled, and the air grew thick with malice. But she stood her ground, reciting a banishment prayer she had found in Eliza’s journal.

The presence shrieked in rage, its form shifting and twisting. For a moment, it seemed as though she would be consumed by the pall. But then, a blinding light filled the space, and the being was forced back, dissipating into nothingness.

Epilogue

Exhausted but relieved, she felt the cottage grow still. The undertones ceased, and the oppressive atmosphere lifted. She knew she had succeeded in breaking the hex. As she prepared to leave the cottage for good, she found a letter addressed to her in the attic. It was written in Eliza’s handwriting.

The letter revealed that Eliza had foreseen her arrival. She had known that only a descendant could undo the curse. Eliza expressed her gratitude and told Rebecca that the cottage now belonged to her, free of the dark legacy.

Rebecca left Blackwood Cottage with a sense of resolution and certainty. She returned to the city, determined to live her putting this all behind her. Little did she know, that as she drove away, a caliginous mass watched from the edge of the forest, its eyes glassy with a baleful hunger. The presence had not been destroyed, only dispelled for a short time. It was now bound to her, waiting for the right moment to return like for like.
